Young children and babies can be more easily accommodated for in a holiday cottage where the parents do not feel pressure from other families (e.g. in a hotel resort) who may not have young children. This improvement in standards has in turn contributed to the increase in the popularity of holiday cottages for weekend breaks, offering in many cases the same standard of accommodation as an hotel, yet with the increased freedom that a holiday cottage offers.

One other significant development in the UK holiday cottage market is that of Farm Stays, driven partly by the farmers and the poor returns they get from farming itself, but also by the desire of parents wanting their children to experience rural life first-hand.

Q) Anyone know of where to find a nice holiday cottage for a last minute weekend away? Need somewhere for Friday October 19th until the Sunday or possibly the Monday, within about 2 hrs drive of London. Only needs to sleep 2 to 4 people. Having a nightmare trying to find anything which is available and not stupidly expensive....just want a quiet weekend away! We've tried the large websites but they're a bit expensive and not much around for when we're looking at going......We've always used little independent places before but our usual ones arent available.

A) Ideally you want to find a place fairly close to where you land after your transatlantic flight. Vacation properties in Canada are expensive and unfortunately your budget would not get you very far. However all hope is not lost. Narrow your search to a specific region in Canada. Toronto is a good place to land and use as your starting point. If you have to fly with in Canada, you can look at WestJet airlines as they are considered the low cost operator in the country. But remember, to book your flights early if this is an option. In Ontario, there are many places for you to research on the web. Look for Wasaga Beach on the Shores of Lake Huron, check the Muskoka's north of Toronto as this is the get away territory for Toronto. Killarney in Ontario is a good drive from Toronto but beautiful. Remember when you consider driving, we drive on the opposite side of the road! You may wish to place a small advertisement in The Toronto Star or Research the classifieds of the Toronto Star and the Globe and Mail. The Globe and Mail has a feature specifically designed for people looking to swap holiday homes or for persons searching for the perfect holiday location. Both papers are available in London and can be found on the internet. Wasaga beach has many small cottages with in walking distance to the waters edge. Some of the fishing lodges in Northern Ontario might be what you are looking for if it is a rustic experience you seek. Search out Tourism Ontario for more information on the different regions in the Province. Remember Ontairo is a large Province taking over 20 hours to drive from one end to the other. Toronto International is the Hub for all flights in Ontario. Via Rail might be able to take you closer to your destination as could Greyhound Canada. Both are accessible on the web. Once you narrow where you want to go, get a good map of the area and then further narrow your search. Another place to research would be Blue Mountain in Collingwood Ontario as often the ski chalets and rooms are deeply discounted during the summer season. Also research the French River area near Sudbury Ontario and check that area as there are many lakes with private rentals available.
